My partner is relocating to Trieste, Italy. As a same-sex couple, we have intentions to make the city our permanent home; we'd like to know which parts of the city are the best for expatriates, safety-wise & environment-wise? Also, we are married in Belgium; does that pose problems for us while we live in Italy? Is there any advice from local residents? I know the city is a great destination for tourists; however, what I’m inquiring about is actually living there, instead of brief sojourns.

Trieste is a very nice city, or better it was before being united to Italy.

Then for a series of reasons the city suffered a long season of hatred. The first were the Italians that try a sort of ethnic cleansing of the Slavic population in the fascist era. Then the Yugoslav occupation tried to repay the Italians.

The Regione where Trieste lies ranks third best in Italy and the town itself is known for a good quality of life the 6th in Italy. (the reports are published on Il Sole 24Ore and linked here).

The town was the cradle of the LEGA NORD phenomenon so I can understand the other guy saying that Trieste people are racist, homophobic (really we Italians are more for the macho side of life, not only in the North East but everywhere, independently by the political opinion) and so on, but I think that it can be OK on a “don’t ask don’t tell” politics.

Usually the best areas in Italian towns are the historical centres but the particularity of the town seems to be a reason for exceptions. Usually the area closed to traffic and near administrative centres are safer.
